The Right Hand Mirror was developed by the US Bureau of Mines as part of a research project aimed at increasing visibility around large mobile vehicles. Unlike most competitive mirrors which were designed for stationary applications and later adapted for mining use, the Right Hand Mirror underwent five years of development specifically for mining applications and is now in use worldwide.
This unique mirror is a RECTANGULAR CONVEX unit measuring 503mm x 302mm, with spherical radius of 30°. The rectangular shape gives the optimum view configuration with a compact shape for mirror protection. Angles of view are approximately 70° vertical and 48° horizontal, which are about 100% wider than typical 305mm circular convex mirrors.
The mirror lens is housed in a rugged, heavy duty steel frame which features a 1cm solid steel overhanging lip to protect the lens from rock fall breakage. The lens is mounted in rubber to absorb vibrations and shock.
The lens is made from tempered (heat toughened), scratch free safety glass.
The Right Hand Mirror gives the driver the ability to sight, at the one time, the top of the load bed to below the back wheel contact point. To obtain a similar field of view a circular lens would have to be at least TWICE as wide as the Right Hand Mirror to give the same effect. Once installed the field of view and image characteristics of the mirrors are such that individual driver adjustment is not required.

Right Hand Mirror Field of Vision |
The Right Hand Mirror overcomes several serious shortcomings in all traditional large vehicle mirrors.
For example;
Traditional "convex" mirrors exhibit unacceptable perspectives in relation to distance and field of view

As an optional extra, the Right Hand Mirror can be mounted using a heavy duty steel mounting post. This assembly includes a friction mounted clutch which allows the mirror to swing towards the mobile plant, should an obstruction be encounted.
Should a lens breakage occur, replacement is simple and quick.
